On the plus side, the start time allowed me to try out something different to the podcast, bringing in Charlie to talk about the game rather than listen to only me yap about it. And he did a typically great job (here are his match reports). On the minus side, I think my laptopâs soundcard is fried, which is why there are dropouts and background noise even though the Media Lounge was empty (except for that woman who entered about midway through). If anybody wants to give me one of them fancy new MacBook Pros, Iâll gladly accept the donation.

But how about that reception for Ben Olsen? In the press box Aaron said that, if he scored, there would be a pitch invasion. I said I would lead it by jumping out of the box and onto the field.

No pun or pop culture reference in the title of today's episode. That's right, today I'm going for sleek, German efficiency as a welcoming tribute to our new corporate overlords.

If you've ever been in the VIP (now Volkswagen) Lounge for a function or an equipment sale, you would be shocked at how it looks. A complete paint job in white, with the exposed celing in black, with a nice image of Jaime silk-screened on one wall, and some comfortable chairs and couches. It looks fantastic and actually fitting for VIPs now. There was also a big VW logo above the bar. I asked Fred Matthes when it got renovated and he said, "In the past 72 hours. It felt like one of those HGTV shows."

Walking down to the press conference, I saw Dave Johnson, who, despite his schedule, always has time for a chat. We talked about Gordon Bradley and I complimented him on the beautiful tribute he wrote about him on Behind The Badge.

As with the Harbour View game, itâs hard to judge how good we are because our opponents were so bad. And with Salt Lake coming up, it might still be a while before we can get a sense of the team. This game should have been at least 3-0 without the red card, so there was good (the fourth goal) and bad (not getting the clean sheet) to take from this.

But, as good as Gallardo has been, I think the most important signing we made in the off-season will be Peralta. He may even, dare I say it, be better than Ryan Nelsen.

Well, that's it. Another season ended due to a predictable offense. Moreno and Emilio at 100% would not have made a difference. We kept everything in front of the Fire's defense and the one time we didn't have a laughable attempt from distance, Simms scored. And to have 13 corners and not put any of them on frame is inexcusable. But then, that's been the case with us ever since Eddie Pope went north.

I donât know about you, but I didn't have a good feeling going into this game â we've seen it play out like this the last two seasons and there was nothing in the past few weeks to suggest this year was going to be different. But, as you can hear, Soehn says that we'll have Emilio and Moreno available, and he's usually not one to give out information like that, so that does give me some hope for Thursday.

Like last week, it's another short show. This is mostly due to the fact that my nephew was in town, so I took him to the game, and I was in the Nest for the first time all year instead of the press box. Even with the tie, he had an incredible time, but I'm paying for it right now with a really bad sore throat. I could barely talk last night, which is why you won't hear me asking any questions in the locker room.

Still, United clinch the Supporters Shield thanks to Colorado improbably beating Chivas USA earlier today. With home field advantage all the way through MLS Cup, a chance for another Double awaitsâ

We enact some payback on Canada for inflicting Corey Hart, Bryan Adams and Anne Murray upon us. Iâm still not sure if anything short of nuclear weapons can make up for Celine Dion.

Emilioâs goal reminded me of growing up playing HORSE with the Tabin Brothers after school. Off the backboard, get your rebound and put it in all in one move. I missed that more often than not, but Gomez and Emilio made it look planned. I did eventually develop a serviceable hook shot that made use of my McHale-like arms, and could block shots pretty good against my smaller friends. But I was lousy under the glass â too skinny (those were the days), so I could easily get pushed out of the paint.

To start, I have to apologize for the poor audio quality. Something went wrong on the way from my mixer, where it sounded fine, into my computer. Normally, I would have tried to fix the problem and then re-record, but I like to have these up less than 24 hours after the final whistle, and my schedule didn't make that possible this time.

But I'm not going to worry too much about this game. It's been a long stretch of games over the past six weeks, we clinch a spot in the playoffs, and we've got some big records to play for.

Raise your hand if you remember the old days when United would go down to Dallas in the middle of the summer and look horrible in the Texas heat? Even in 1999, we took a 3-0 drubbing. We even once made Bobby Rhine look like a national team candidate, for Ben's sake.

Well, those days are over. United haven't lost in Dallas since the 5-1 drubbing in 2004, when we had to trade a draft pick for Jason Thompson and call up a player from the Northern Virginia Royals (GR Cannons) so that we could dress 15 players.

Originally, the show notes was going to consist of writing "Jaime Moreno" 109 times. But then I realized that not only is that really obnoxious, but it's also redundant. Once you've said "Jaime Moreno," you've said all you need to say a thousand times.

But there were also ten other players on the field wearing black last night, and they all deserve praise. I got scared when Altidore came on to start the half, but the defense's ability to shut he and Angel down in the second half is making me very confident about this team right now. Then again, it's tough to have a four-game winning streak going into the homestretch and be pessimistic.

It's been a while since I've shown my usual contempt for Columbus. I've said plenty of times that I have grudging respect for Sigi Schmid, because he gets results without playing anything resembling attractive soccer, and Columbus did that for years before he even got there. But last night's game showed the difference between the two teams: quality forwards.

Best performance of the year? I'd say so. In all of our other dominating performances (NY, Colorado, Chicago), we were at home facing teams either missing players and/or going through a bad spell. Here, we were on the road against the conference leaders, who hadn't lost in five games, and outplayed them to a man. Getting the shutout, not even allowing a shot on goal in the second half, showed that the defense kept its focus against a team that makes you pay if you don't.

Over at The DCenters, Kinney said it best in his First Impressions.

"In short they played like they were DC United against a team that has never known that winning a championship is like."

Even though America never looked like they could spell goal if you spotted them the g, o and l, I would have preferred to see United open up on them in that 10-minute stretch after the red card instead of passing the ball around. As good as we played, we need to be more deadly in front of goal if we're going to make something of this year.

While United didn't play particularly well, we have played worse against worse teams, so when you factor the heat and Houston's overall quality throughout the pitch (I can't find a single weakness on this team), I can handle a 1-0 loss. The defense was solid (apart from the goal), and Boswell and Vanney played well together. Even if you don't want to relive this game, download it for the Vanney interview.

All season long I've said how there are only two teams in the league with one guy in the front and one guy in the back who can win games for you, New England (Twellman and Reis) and LA (Donovan and Cannon). Now I think you have to add DC United to that list, with Perkins keeping us from sheer destruction while Emilio takes his one chance and makes the most of it. As for Vanney, I'll still wait a little while before making a decision on whether or not the trade was a good idea. But with McTavish stepping up the way he did, he might wind up as the best defensive sub in the league.

When I do my commentary on The 2 Gs every Tuesday, I'm always asked how I think United will do in the upcoming week. Regardless of the opponent, I always try to give a measured response, either saying that there are no slam dunks in this league, or citing United's poor history in certain situations. Games like this are the reason why. Ugh. That's all I have to say.

Man, oh man, have you ever seen a Fire team look that bad? I know they were missing players, but they've always been able to manage it. That they looked so out of place suggests that Sarachan hasn't prepared the bench well (i.e. Hudson) and/or they've made some bad draft picks. I did like what I saw out of Bakary Soumare, the kid from UVA, but it's clear that their kids are not ready for MLS.

There's a story that Kevin Payne likes to tell. Shortly after Ray Hudson took over, he, Payne and Bruce Arena were having lunch and talking about the team. Olsen was in the middle of his injury problems and nobody was sure if he was going to be ever play again, no less return to who he was before the injuries. So Hudson was wondering if he should trade him and Arena said, "The thing about Ben Olsen is...his heart is as big as this restaurant." And with that, Hudson was convinced.

I wonder if Arena is regretting those words right now. When I hit practice this week, I'll be sure to ask Ben about their friendship over the years.

Episode 52: A Full Deck

This is more like it, not just for Jaime's goal, but for the way United took control of the game in the second half and didn't stop. Even when Toronto was throwing everything forward I didn't panic too much, and not because they had an incompetent twit like Edson Buddle out there instead of Esky or Dichio, who could've made the difference.

So, I'm starting to get a little more confident in the team now. This Saturday will provide a stronger test. Even with Houston struggling, they're not an easy team to beat.

Wow, I had almost forgotten what winning feels like. As the game wore on, even as Chivas were piling it on, you could see in their faces that they were not going to let this one slip by. Maybe that's the sign of guys who are used to winning rediscovering what they're about, I don't know. But I do believe that scraping out an ugly win is better than losing with dignity. I don't know if that attitude will work on that NPR segment, but I don't care. In three days we went from being a disappointment to a team to be reckoned with again. I just hope we stay there.

Well, it's a start. Most importantly, we finally saw the team that we expect from DC. True, Vaughn handed us the game when he sent off Joseph, but we were playing very well before that. In the locker room, you could see it in their faces, and you'll hear on the show, how relieved they were to get a performance like this under their belts, even though they were disappointed by not winning.

But sure enough, they get United to play badly, and pull out a convincing win. Anyway, we're back home next week, and I think the team will be angry enough to put some serious hurt down on poor Kansas City.

It may be too early to say it, but I think that, in Emilio, United have something they've never had before - a Ruiz or Twellman-type of player who could take that one chance he gets in the game and make the difference. So when you combine that with Gomez and Moreno being dangerous for an entire game, anything is possible.

Come on, there was no way I wasn't going to make a Douglas Adams reference for this one. Anyway, the Man Of The Day goes to Ben Olsen. The game part of the practice ended with Olsen scoring, then celebrating by running over to Mark Simpson and jumping on his back.

The main topic of conversation on the sidelines was the cold. I don't think it was as bad as the Harbour View game two years ago, but it was still bad.

So much for an off-season. I'm doing almost as much DC United work as during the regular season. This wasn't as fancy an event as the ownership announcement; no Willard Hotel or political dignitaries. But it's always fun to go to the stadium and see everybody. In other situations, I've removed the Spanish and left you with just the translator, but here I left it in today because it would have sounded like Boris was answering his own questions, and that would have been weird.

Episode 40: New Ownership Press Conference

The Screaming Eagles Podcast site is currently down for maintenance, but I wanted to get this out to you today. One of the main issues that a lot of people, including myself, have had is that MLS rarely gives off the impression of being a "Major League," and thus worthy of such coverage. They don't have the money of the NFL or NBA, so their occasional attempts to be glitzy or trendy often fall flat.

But today, they got it right. An announcement of this magnitude deserves a big location, and in DC, a ballroom at the Willard Hotel is the place to be. I definitely felt underdressed, but hey, at least I wore pants. This was a major news event. Not only was all of the Washington sports press there, but you also had the City Hall beat reporters (note that Fenty refers to at least one person by name), the business and real estate press. My only regret was that I didn't get to ask Congresswoman Norton which was the bigger thrill, today's news or appearing on The Colbert Report.

Episode 38: Gutted

That's the main word that comes to mind right now after the loss. At least this year we had some time to plan for the playoff collapse. Last year, it was a couple of bad games in the regular season and then, blam-o.

Anyway, congrats to the Revs, who deserved their win. They played a fair game, not being the dirty hacks they usually are. They took their one chance and we didn't convert any of ours, just in case you didn't hear the players say that.

Episode 37: The Quick Turnaround

Man, did I put this one together quickly. Nothing like a Sunday night game to force you to nail it in one take. I don't really have much to say, because I really need to get some sleep right now. But hereÃ??s another thought for anybody who believes that maybe we didnÃ??t deserve to go through: This year, we played seven games against the Red Bulls, more than we ever had in a single year. We won four and tied three. Yet, if the Red Bulls had somehow pulled this one out and advanced, they would have been able to say that they are better than us. As far as IÃ??m concerned, when you only win 14% of your games in a season against another team, you donÃ??t earn squat. We deserved this win, not because of the way we played tonight, but because they were so clearly inferior to us throughout the regular season, the Open Cup, and now the MLS Playoffs.

So, I got a quotes from a lot of players (Adu, Perkins, Moreno, Namoff, Boswell, in addition to Nowak), but they donÃ??t go on too long, which is good, because I like keeping these to a manageable length.

I have to admit, I was dreading this game because of the way the team has played recently. ItÃ??s too easy to go into Giants Stadium over-confident because of the past history and have them steal a game-winner when youÃ??re not playing well. When that happens, you feel like a schmuck. Think back to our games against LA this year as a reminder.

But then Gomez scores and all is right with the world once again. As soon as he dished it off to Moreno, you knew it was going in. Geek that I am, I have a spreadsheet of all the United games IÃ??ve been to, featuring the dates, results, competition, attendance, goal-scorers, etc. At the bottom is a count of how many goals were scored by each player.

Episode 35: Limping In

Flew in from vacation early this morning to see THAT? We had better fix whatever is wrong with the defense quickly because the Red Bulls will be out for blood.

Well, at least I got the show firing on all cylinders again, with quotes galore (Gomez, through a translator, makes his debut as a reward for his two goals). I ask Esky and Freddy about Boswell's photo shoot. And I produced it in near-record time, less than two hours from the time I got home from the game until the moment I am writing this. Granted, I had most of the script done before I walked through the door, but I am glad that I don't have to be up all night putting this together.

Episode 34: Deja Vu All Over Again

Is this year looking like a repeat of last year? Hard to say. Moreno showed enough last night to tell me that he's ready for the post-season, and it was good to see Esky, albeit in a limited role, back on the field and running at defenders. Still, these screw-ups mean a lot more at this time of year, and, while I doubt we will have much trouble with either Kansas City or New York, against either Chicago or New England is a different story.

I had another recorder malfunction in the media room, so I had to rely on my trusty notepad to convey to you what was being said ny Nowak and the players. I've since fixed it (turns out the Hold switch, which disables all the controls, was on, and, as a result, the recorder wouldn't turn on. That must be what happened when I went to interview Marco two weeks ago. I guess the players aren't the only ones keeping their heads in the game as the season comes to an end.

Great to have our best offensive display since the 5-1 victory over Columbus on May 31. Bad to give up three, even if one was a penalty (has Perkins ever stopped one?) .

Great job getting the 1996 team back and to see the tribute to Marco. Bad job by me talking to Marco while somehow not hitting the Record button on my recorder.

Didn't get to start recording until about midnight. Since I need my beauty sleep, I decided not to record separate introductions for every quote, as I usually do. Instead, I'm giving you the (mostly) unedited versions of Nowak's press conference and the players' quotes. It adds a few minutes to the length of the show, but it also saved me about 90 minutes of production time. In a couple of places, you may have to turn it up to hear the question (the reason why I record the intros is so that you don't have to keep fiddling with the volume), but for the most part they came out OK.

Anyway, what a special night for Jaime Moreno and DC United! These milestones are really more for us fans and the press than the players, unless your name is Barry Bonds. I think the players just want to focus on the game and do what they can to win, and all this ancillary stuff can be a distraction sometimes. You could see that Jaime's teammates were happy for him, but also that the win was so decisive. As you'll hear, the players all say that, while it's great to keep on winning, they don't think they're not playing at full potential yet. If that ever happens, watch out. This team is going to be 1998-scary.
